A 2026 study, published in Sensors, used imaging technology called functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy to examine how Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) treatment affected cerebral activity in stroke patients during physical tasks. These treatments were found to help the brain improve how it matches blood flow to areas that are working the hardest. This process, called neurovascular coupling, is important for learning, memory and overall brain performance.
Every human brain needs a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients for optimal function. Treatment with HBOT makes that possible by increasing the amount of oxygen the blood can carry through the entire body.
Treatments are non-invasive and relaxing. The patient rests in a pressurized chamber while breathing pure oxygen, which travels through the bloodstream and is able to reach areas of the brain that may be deprived under normal conditions. This higher oxygen blood flow gives brain cells what they need to stay healthy while also helping the brain clear away waste products. Together, these effects can support healthy brain function, making it easier to think clearly, stay sharp and maintain memory.
Scientists continue to learn more about the benefits of HBOT, but the growing body of research is encouraging. By improving blood flow, increasing oxygen delivery and supporting the brain’s natural healing processes, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy continues to be a safe way to support brain health, cognitive function and overall neurological wellness.
